FDA guidlines & The Science of Spray Tannig

The FDA advises asking the following when having a sunless solution applied

Q: How will I be protected from exposure to the entire area of the eyes, in addition to the eyes themselves?

A: Most clients decline eye stickers that protect the eyes due to the tan lines. Which I agree with. Therefore, the tanning operator will direct you to close your eyes when spraying near the face.

Q:  How will my lips be protected from exposure and all parts of the body covered by mucous membrane?

A: A medical grade lip protectant will be applied using a sterile cotton applicator prior to each spray tan application. If a client requests to be in the nude for an all-over-tan the operator will provide a disposable undergarment to protect private areas.

Q: How will I be protected from internal exposure caused by inhaling or ingesting sunless product.

A: When spraying close to the face, your operator will instruct you to hold your breath for a couple seconds at a time until that area is complete.

An extraction fan is also in place to remove the tanning solution from the air before it is able to enter the room.

FDA Approval on DHA and what is DHA?

  • The active ingredient in sunless tanners is the compound dihydroxyacetone (DHA). DHA is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in externally applied cosmetics intended to add color to the skin.
  • DHA is manufactured from natural sources including – but not limited to – sugar beet and rapeseed.

  • Spray tan solutions all have a chemical called “DHA” a colorless, sugar compound derived from natural sources that interacts with the amino acids in the outer most layer of the skin. DHA works with the skins surface cells causing them to darken. The depth of your spray tan depends on the thickness of the stratum corneum, and your natural melanin content. The more melanin you have the more your skin will react.

This is why some can use the same solutions but still not achieve the darkness level intended. Spray tanning can blur imperfections & hide redness, however it is not makeup, or like a paint. As an educated tanning specialist I will be able to identify your skin type, and choose the correct base color and DHA % that will work best for you to combat orange or brassy tones. I also encourage the use of additives to help you achieve your darkest, most hydrated skin in minutes!
